Are you one of the thousands of people suffering from heartburn on a daily basis? Acid Reflux affects as many as 50% of the world’s population! Heartburn is something that most adults will experience during their lifetime. It is characterized by an uncomfortable burning sensation right behind the breastbone that often times creeps up the throat, and is a symptom more so than a disease.
It’s actually possible to have reflux without heartburn, but it is not possible to have heartburn without reflux. While over-the-counter and prescription medications are available, if you suffer only from occasional heartburn, lifestyle changes and heartburn home remedies may be the route you want to take.
1. Avoid Processed Foods
Processed foods are full of chemicals, preservatives, artificial flavors and dyes, added sugars and who knows what else. You don’t need them. Your body certainly doesn’t need them. Eat raw high-quality fruits and vegetables. Basically, anything that you can trace back to a farm where it grew out of the ground as nature intended.
2. Baking Soda
A teaspoon of Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) can help put an end to the burning, sensation of heartburn caused by acid reflux. It has a pH higher than 7.0, and therefore neutralizes stomach acid. Just mix the baking soda in a glass of water and drink it.
3. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol
Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol can set you up for terrible reflux. The nicotine and alcohol both work to weaken your lower esophageal sphincter, making it that much easier for stomach contents and acid to splash up into your esophagus. Alcohol is also going to irritate your stomach in general.
4. Mustard Reduce Acid reflux
Mustard is an alkalizing food that is full of minerals and contains a weak acid in the form of vinegar. Consuming mustard straight, while it may make you grimace at first, may ultimately end up making your smile. It will help neutralize the acid and pain caused by acid reflux.
Bananas contain natural antacids that can act as a buffer against acid reflux. If you want to try out the simplest home remedies for heartburn first, try letting a few bananas ripen up nicely and eating one every day.
